General information only
The guides, the size charts, the quoted ordinance text and the summaries of regulation here were researched properly and written to be of actual use to somebody with a job to do. None of that makes them advice. They are not legal advice, they are not engineering advice, and they are not environmental compliance advice. Before you rely on a requirement, confirm it with whichever authority genuinely holds jurisdiction over the address in question.
Which ordinance we quote, and exactly where it stops
Where this site quotes a refuse rule by section number, that section is an ordinance of the City of Saginaw and nothing else. § 50.05, § 50.06 and § 94.068 are City Code; Chapter 50 is current through Ordinance O-274, passed 22 September 2025 and effective 2 October 2025; and you can read the whole chapter on the City's codifier rather than take our word for it. We date-stamp the chapter because codes change and an undated quotation is worth very little.
Those sections stop at the city line. They do not reach Saginaw Charter Township, which is a separate government of 41,679 people whose mail also reads Saginaw. They do not reach Buena Vista, Carrollton, Kochville, Blumfield, Bridgeport, Spaulding, James, Thomas, Tittabawassee, Taymouth or Swan Creek. They do not reach Zilwaukee, Frankenmuth, Birch Run or St. Charles. For those sixteen communities we were able to establish the county, the kind of government, the 2020 Census population and a straight-line distance, and we were not able to establish their refuse rules at all — no ordinance, no container rule, no permit requirement, no fee. So this site does not state any. “We could not find one” is not the same statement as “there is none,” and we are not going to let the first quietly become the second. Call the township or village office for anything binding, and treat any page that gives you one set of rules for the whole county as guessing.
Two further limits on the same point. The ordinance does not require anybody to rent anything; it states what the City's own collection will not take, and what you do about that is your decision. And we claim no affiliation with, endorsement by, or work for the City of Saginaw, any township, the County, the County Land Bank, the Mid Michigan Waste Authority, EGLE, LARA or MDOT. We quote their published documents. That is the whole of the relationship.
We publish no separation distance
You will not find a figure on this site for how far a container has to sit from a building, a wall or a property line — not in feet, not in meters, not as a range and not as a typical case. We could not find a sourced one for this market, and the code picture here is genuinely unusual, in both directions. Michigan's statewide rule adopts NFPA 1, Uniform Fire Code, 2006 edition, under Mich. Admin. Code R 29.1652, which is not the International Fire Code at all; and R 29.1651 switches that rule off in a local jurisdiction that has adopted a nationally recognized fire prevention code. The City of Saginaw enforces the 2024 International Fire Code under Code § 92.30(A)(1). Saginaw Charter Township enforces the 2018 edition. For Buena Vista Charter Township we could not find which code is in force, and we are not going to assume the state default on its behalf. Three different answers inside a few miles. Ask the fire department with jurisdiction over the address, and be wary of any page that hands you a number without asking where you are. Nothing here determines fire-code compliance for anybody.
Ground conditions, and what we will not tell you
We are not qualified to assess the ground at any address, including yours, and this site says so rather than implying otherwise. We publish no soil bearing capacity, no frost depth, no water-table depth and no flood-zone determination. What we do describe is surface behavior that anybody working here learns: firm, dry ground carries a loaded container, and ground softened by a wet week or moving through freeze and thaw does not. Plywood under the wheels and under both rails spreads the load and is a great deal less trouble than a repair. Beyond that, a driveway, a slab or a verge is a question for somebody who can stand on it and look at it.
Sizes, weights and capacities
Two boxes described as the same size can measure differently, because they were built by different manufacturers to different drawings. Material is worse: the same cubic yard of it weighs one thing dry and another thing after a wet week standing open to the sky, and worse again as it ages and compacts. Every figure published here is an approximate working number meant to help you pick a size, not a specification. Where the comparison table says what fills a container first, that is a statement about physics, true of anybody's steel, and not a term of any deal.
Demolition, older housing and notification
Demolition and renovation work carries notification duties that are easy to miss. The federal NESHAP residential exemption covers residential buildings having four or fewer dwelling units that are under private control or ownership, and it falls away where the work is for urban renewal or forms part of a public or commercial project. Demolitions below the asbestos thresholds still require notification even where there is no asbestos, at a fee of $100 per original notification under MCL 324.5519(3) and with ten working days' notice. The agencies are EGLE and LEO through MIOSHA for work by employers, and Michigan Lead Safe and the US EPA cover lead-safe renovation in older housing. Nothing on this site should be read as suggesting that regulated material may be put in a container, or that testing and notification can be skipped, and we make no claim of any standing of our own to carry out that sort of work.
Excavation
If you are digging, the Michigan numbers are not the national ones: notice at least 72 hours but not more than 14 calendar days before the start of any blasting or excavation, a caution zone of 48 inches either side of the marks, and a ticket valid for 21 days. MISS DIG 811 is where the notice is filed. That duty attaches to the excavation, not to where a container is set down.
Figures quoted from public sources
Population and housing figures on this site come from US Census tables as published, and climate information from the National Weather Service office covering this county. They are quoted to make a practical point about which government an address sits under and how material behaves here, and for no other purpose. We publish no distance as a drive time; every distance on this site is straight-line and labeled as such, and it is measured from a secondary coordinate for our own street rather than our own door, so treat it as approximate.
Links to other sites
The outbound links on this site go to city, township, county, state and federal material because that material is what these pages were written from, and you are entitled to read the source rather than take our word. None of those sites is ours. What they publish, and what they change, is their business.
Photographs, and what this site does not carry
Photographs on this site illustrate the kind of work described on the page they appear on. They are not evidence of any particular job, and no caption on this site names anyone other than the owner. This site displays no customer reviews, no star ratings and no testimonials of any kind. If real, attributable reviews are supplied later they can be added then; invented ones will not be.
